Clean Water for Secondary Schools

In May 2012, the Directors for the Wentworth Africa Foundation visited Tanzania and their main target was to visit the two schools which the Foundation has in the past supported.

Msimbati Secondary School and Mnolela Secondary Schools are located in the rural regions of Mtwara and Lindi. During the trip, the Directors identified the most pressing needs for the two schools were access to clean water, and affordable and reliable Light.

Water well before installation of tanks

Objectives

  • The existing water harvesting from a hole in the ground is the reason for the high incidence of diarrhoea and other stomach issues. The female boarders, in particular, suffer from chronic stomach problems.  In Msimbati Secondary School the female borders have to walk half a kilometre to collect water.
  • The seriousness of the problem was clear and the Wentworth Foundation team put in place a plan to construct a very simple, easy to maintain water harvesting system that was large enough in volume to provide water year round.

Outcome

  • The result was construction of 9 x 5000 Litre tanks dotted around the school structures.  Once the rain started in November/December 2012, the tanks would hold enough water to be used throughout next year.
